Utah County Mom: Celebrity Birthday Party

One of my all time heroes is an astronaut named

Jim Lovell.

Jim Lovell was the command module pilot on Apollo 8 (the first one to go to the moon even though they didn’t land) and was the commander of Apollo 13, which was severely damaged in space but the crew and craft still returned home safely.

Jim Lovell was born March 25, so we always have a “Jim Lovell birthday party” to celebrate every year.  It’s one of my favorite traditions!

First we go to “Apollo burger” to eat lunch.

Then I give out “Grab bags for girls” and “Grab bags for boys” which are purchased at my local dollar store.  You have no idea what is in them when you buy them, which is why it’s so much fun.  Our family is getting bigger (we are up to 11 people now) so I had to go to 2 different dollar stores to get enough bags – which is why some look different than others.

We then take turns going around the table opening our bags.  To be honest we trash most of the stuff, but it is really fun to see what we got.

They usually include a variety of things, and for only $1 it’s a bargain!  This year we got things like headbands, crayons, Easter eggs, jump ropes, yo-yo’s, plastic lizards, and hair clips.  There are usually 3 or 4 things in each package.

Lily’s bag came with a ton of hair clips and bracelets, among other things.  We put all of the hair clips in her hair at once…

…and all of the bracelets on her wrists as well.

I definitely recommend having a “celebrity birthday party” as an annual tradition.  It’s tons of fun for the kids and adults, and is low cost too!  Pick a theme that has to do with the person you are celebrating.  This is something I look forward to carrying on for years!
